Bennett and Tevis to do demonstration on Saturday

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is set for 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 19, at George H.P. Smith Park in Lewes, and this week will feature a peach dessert demonstration.

At 10 a.m. in the demo tents, it’s all about peaches, when Henry Bennett — a sixth-generation farmer from Bennett Orchards talks about what it takes to grow Bennett peaches. Then, pastry chef Dru Tevis and Chase Cline — owners of the new Brûlé Bakery — will take those peaches and make a peachy dessert: caramel vanilla bean panna cotta with fresh Bennett peaches.

At the market this Saturday, 35 local farmers and producers will bring cantaloupe and watermelon, sweet corn, peaches, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, peppers, carrots, potatoes, lettuces, kale, spinach, arugula, beets, radishes, oysters, live crabs, hand-picked crabmeat, grass-fed chicken, lamb, beef, pork, honey, jams, mushrooms, freshly-laid eggs, coffee drinks, kombucha, cold-pressed juices, fresh-baked breads, pastries made with fruit from market farmers, gluten-free offerings, apple-cider doughnuts, herb, veggie and flower plants, cut-flower bouquets and more.

The HLFM Wednesday Market continues every Wednesday from 8 to 11:30 a.m. through Sept. 3. Customers will find fresh local fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, baked goods and flowers from 14 farmers and producers at the Crooked Hammock Brewery parking lot, 36707 Crooked Hammock Way.

The HLFM has two events coming up at the Saturday Market at George H. P. Smith Park.

On Saturday, Aug. 2, the HLFM will hold its annual Tomato Festival, where everyone can bring their largest home-grown tomatoes for the Biggest Tomato at the Market contest, enter the Guess the Number of Tomatoes in the Jar contest for a prize for the closest guess, a 10 a.m. demonstration from chef Bill Clifton of Lewes Yacht Club and more.

On Saturday, Aug. 16, Kids Day at the Market returns with a special Children’s Storytime, hands-on kid’s activities and crafts, games throughout the market, and prizes including picture books donated by The Nature Generation.
